Because the features were
invisible in normal or visual light, pin flags were used to mark the boundaries of the ovals for mapping purposes.
As can be seen below, a person standing in view of the thermal imager was clearly visible and so could be directed to mark the
edges of the feature. Note the heat signature of the surveyor's body – the jacket is a noticeably better insulator than
the pants.
