Move ahead 275 years to 1979. Divers from the Thanet Archaeological Unit, at the eastern tip of Kent County
just north of the Goodwon Sands, were contacted by a local fisherman who had
snagged an unusual metal fitting in about 60 feet of water. Divers went down to investigate and were confronted
with what looked like an entire wooden ship. In fact, it was Stirling Castle emerging from a bank of sand.
The vessel was intact from gun deck to keel.
