The Caribbean island of St. Maarten/Saint Martin is the smallest inhabited island divided between two nations. Split between the Netherlands and France in 1648,
the French side, lying to the north, is slightly larger in area, while today the Dutch side has a higher population. The capitals are the French Marigot and the Dutch
Philipsburg.
